The Outsider's take

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva declared on Wednesday that the United Nations is failing in its most crucial duty: safeguarding humanity from the devastating scourge of war. He warned that the organisation’s credibility has plummeted to unprecedented lows.

Addressing the opening of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, Lula highlighted that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has personally witnessed the excesses perpetrated by major powers during his tenure. He argued that structural flaws within the UN Charter have granted powerful states the “luxury of indifference”.

Lula cautioned against succumbing to the logic of force, asserting that “war is not politics by other means but rather the collapse of politics”.

Furthermore, Lula criticised the pressure exerted on the International Criminal Court and its members, arguing that such actions foster impunity. He warned that threatening entire civilisations with extermination would not bring stability to the Middle East.

The Brazilian president also blamed the UN Security Council’s paralysis for exacerbating global crises, stating that the international community has become a prisoner of the body’s failure to fulfil its responsibilities.
