The Outsider's take

Brazil: Politics | The Outsider

The Outsider projects that Lula has won a fourth term. With 98% of the vote counted, he leads Flávio Bolsonaro 51.74% to 48.26%, or 62,641,973 votes to 58,436,437.

Three weeks ago, Flávio finished first and the polls had it wrong. Tonight, Lula closed the gap and overtook him.

A fourth term no one in Brazil has won before

Lula turns 81 on Tuesday, and he'll be the oldest president in Brazil's history. It's a comeback in two ways. He trailed in the first round, and no first-round runner-up had won a runoff since democracy returned in 1985. He also returns after 580 days in prison on corruption convictions that were later annulled, and after beating Jair Bolsonaro in 2022.

Brazil has now handed its presidency to a man who went from a prison cell to the palace and back again, and kept it from a family whose patriarch is in prison for trying to overturn an election.

The pardon is dead

Flávio had pledged to free his father if elected. That promise dies with this result. Jair Bolsonaro's 27-year sentence for plotting a coup stands, and the Supreme Court's verdict survives its first real electoral test.

But the family isn't finished

Don't mistake this for a defeat of the dynasty. Michelle and Carlos Bolsonaro are heading to the Senate, Jair Renan and Renato to the lower house, and the PL took at least 16 of the 54 Senate seats contested. Lula will govern against a hostile Congress, with a Senate that can pressure the justices who convicted Jair. He won the presidency but not the machinery.

The margin is the real story. Nearly 58.4 million Brazilians voted for a family whose patriarch is in prison for a coup plot, including an evangelical bloc that sees the sentence as persecution. And at 81, Lula has no obvious successor, so the next fight starts now.

Washington doesn't get another capital

The result matters far beyond Brazil. Trump called Jair's case a "witch hunt" and imposed a 50% tariff on Brazil. A Flávio win would have extended a wave of right-wing victories for Trump-friendly candidates across Latin America. Instead, Brazil stays out of that column.

Brazil's resistance isn't pure defiance. After a cordial Lula–Trump meeting in Washington, the US eased the punitive tariffs. Lula bargains but doesn't surrender.

Mexico follows the same pattern. Sheinbaum rejected Trump's offer to send US troops against the cartels, calling it a hostile act. Yet she agreed to deploy 10,000 more troops to the border to head off tariffs. The two biggest economies in Latin America aren't anti-American. They just won't be run from Washington.

The harsh truth

Brazil put a convicted ex-president behind bars and has now kept his son out of the palace. But an identity that more than 58 million people voted for doesn't vanish in a runoff. Convictions only deter if the next generation isn't rewarded for defiance, and the Bolsonaros will be back in 2030.
