The Outsider's take

Catherine Ringer, the singer-songwriter and co-founder of the influential French duo Les Rita Mitsouko, has passed away at the age of 68.

Her children announced her death to AFP, revealing that she succumbed to an aggressive fast-moving cancer on September 14, 2026. Born in Suresnes in 1957, Ringer’s musical journey began in the late 1970s with theatrical and dance productions. However, her life took a transformative turn in 1979 when she met guitarist Fred Chichin. Together they formed one of French music’s most original duos, seamlessly blending rock, pop, funk, electro and chanson into a unique sound.

The duo achieved commercial and critical success in the mid-1980s with their hit “Marcia Baïla,” which became an iconic anthem of the French music scene. Their mainstream breakthrough continued with albums like “The No Comprendo” (1986), produced by David Bowie collaborator Tony Visconti. This album yielded classics such as “Andy” and “C’est Comme Ça.”

Tributes have consistently praised her as an irreplaceable figure in French popular culture. She was celebrated for her free-spirited nature, provocative lyrics and original sound. Her deep love for her craft and decades-long dedication to preserving her work with Chichin have left an enduring legacy that continues to shape French music.
